Spooky Season in Coastal Virginia

As students head back to school in Coastal Virginia, the appearance of witches, werewolves, and tombstones in front yards throughout the region usually aren’t far behind. Halloween in Hampton Roads isn’t reserved just for October. Instead, residents get in on the holiday fun as soon as Labor Day is in the rearview. If you’re looking for fun ways to celebrate fall in Coastal Virginia, turn your attention to the spookiest Halloween events. Here are a few of our favorites:

Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream

Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream | Select nights through October 31

Nobody does it better than Busch Gardens when it comes to haunted houses. While the park might be best known for its gorgeous landscaping and thrilling coasters, few local Halloween events are more exciting than their annual Howl-O-Scream offerings. Haunted houses, spooky décor, and plenty of wickedly delicious treats make this spot a must-visit for Coastal Virginia locals. Family-friendly events during the day mean that everyone – even the tiniest of toddlers – can get in on the fun. Sticking around after dark and don’t want to be scared? Purchase a unique “no boo” necklace that glows in the dark and wards off the scare actors!

Haunted Hunt Club Farms

Haunted Hunt Club Farm | Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 31

If haunted hayrides are more your thing, head to Hunt Club Farm, one of Coastal Virginia’s longest-running – and most critically acclaimed – spooky sites. Creepy cannibals await visitors of the Village of the Dead while the Corn Stalker haunts the Forbidden Fields. Not a fan of haunted houses? Families will enjoy the bonfires, carnival rides, and delicious treats available day and nighttime. Pick a pumpkin, sip some cider, and bask in the delights of Virginia Beach’s most delightfully frightful attractions!

Suffolk Peanut Festival

Suffolk Peanut Festival | October 8-10, 2021

Not a fan of haunted houses? The Suffolk Peanut Festival is another great way to embrace the coming of autumn – minus the spooks. This family-friendly event recognizes the city’s agricultural heritage and devotion to all things peanuts. Concerts, carnival rides, tractor pulls, and demolition derbies await more than 100,000 visitors annually. The peanut butter sculpting contest is incredibly entertaining.

Colonial Ghosts Walking Tours

Colonial Ghosts Walking Tours | Nightly

Coastal Virginia has a long, storied history. Nobody knows this better than the guides behind Williamsburg’s Colonial Ghosts walking tours. Consistently ranked among the top ten ghost tours in the United States, Colonial Ghosts is one spooky attraction you won’t want to miss. Part historical, part folklore, these tours rely on good old-fashioned storytelling to scare participants long after they’ve gone home for the night. Aided by renowned psychics and investigators, Colonial Ghosts guides have done extensive research into some of the scariest local ghost stories. Traipsing around Colonial Williamsburg in the dark is spooky enough, but these stories will linger with you even after the tour!
