Nalu Flow Art is an ocean resin art business, creating ocean inspired, functional artwork by local artist Nicole McDermott.
What's in a Name?
Nalu is a Hawaiian word for "wave," kind of like ebb and flow. I am from Hawaii, and lived in Hawaii when I had started my business. The ocean is part of my soul and my happy place. To me, life is like a wave and I felt strongly about incorporating Nalu in my business name.
My business logo has a large wave with two small waves, which represents my twins and I. It is just the three of us, and I found that it was important to include them, as they inspire me every day to do better and to be better.
Family & Hawaiian Influence
When we were kids we lived in Lanikai, a small town on the windward side of Oahu. It is the most beautiful beach. I have so many great memories there with my Dad, from surfing, paddling, kayaking, swimming. It is my happy place. I try to re-create that perfect, beautiful beach and ocean in every piece.
My sister, Michele Pinero, recently started working with me. She is not only my sister, but my best friend, helping me raise my two littles. She is a retired Chief in the Coast Guard and currently builds all of our furniture.
I like to create functional pieces that clients can use and adore at the same time. Some pieces we build ourselves (end table, sofa tables, console tables), and some we find and know we can turn it into something even more beautiful.
