    DRAG Yourself to Brunch

There’s nothing quite like a Sunday brunch to cure what ails you. After a long night on the town, a mimosa can do wonders to cure your hangover and chase away the Sunday Scaries. Brunch is great on its own but becomes even better when there’s entertainment involved.

Drag queen brunches have exploded in popularity over the last decade or so – in no small part thanks to RuPaul’s Drag Race – and have become a staple in the Coastal Virginia area.

Never Been to a Drag Brunch?

If you’ve never been to a drag brunch before, you’ll want to make sure to visit the ATM before you arrive. Performers work for tips, and the more love you show the drag queens, the better.

It also helps to check your inhibitions at the door. While nothing especially explicit goes on, you can expect plenty of double entendres and dirty routines. That doesn’t mean you have to leave your husband or grandparents at home, though; drag brunches can be tons of fun for the whole family!

Here are a few of our favorite spots for drag brunches in Coastal Virginia:

    Croc’s 19th Street Bistro

620 19th St., Virginia Beach, VA

Offering one of the longest-running drag brunches in the Coastal Virginia region, Croc’s knows a thing or two about a good time. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, bachelorette party, or the weekend itself, this is the place to be. Nosh on french toast bites with a blueberry compote and whipped cream, or indulge in breakfast pizza topped with eggs, bacon, sausage, and white gravy. There are two shows every Sunday, but be sure to get reservations in advance – this is one show you won’t want to miss!

    Ilusions

    Various locations

If you like a show that embraces famous divas, you’ll want to make reservations for Illusions. A combination of burlesque and comedy, the show features some of Coastal Virginia’s best impressionists. Don’t be surprised if you run into the likes of Madonna, Cher, or Britney Spears at brunch! Shows are held throughout the region, so be sure to check to see what’s on the menu at each location. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime to secure a great seat!

    37th and Zen

    1083 W 37th St., Norfolk, VA

A Ghent favorite, Lip Gloss and Lashes was voted the best drag brunch of 2021 by Gay HRVA. While operating mostly as a dive bar, 37th and Zen truly comes alive during these brunches. Though the interiors might not look like much, the atmosphere serves as the perfect blank canvas for truly stellar performances. Reservations are a must, but shows happen on both Saturdays and Sundays, so there’s plenty of opportunities to dine. Can’t make brunch? 37th and Zen hosts a number of drag shows, so be sure to check their schedule for upcoming events.

    Mermaid Winery

    3320 W 22nd St., Norfolk

Featuring one of Coastal Virginia’s prettiest patios, Mermaid Winery has become a staple for wine-lovers throughout the area. It’s also home to Sirens Drag Brunch, happening every second Saturday of the month at 11 AM. The $15 brunch includes a lavish buffet, over the top performers, and plenty of mimosas to go around!

    Waterside District

    333 Waterside Dr., Norfolk, VA

While less frequent than some other shows, the Waterside drag brunch is one you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re celebrating Mother’s Day, Galentine’s Day, or another special event, there’s something special about dining down by the water with some of the area’s best drag performers. Your ticket includes either a Bloody Mary or mimosa, access to the brunch buffet, and a show put on by none other than Sandra Lopez and her Queens!

    Grey Goose

    118 Old Hampton Ln., Hampton

For some drag action across the Peninsula, head to the Grey Goose, a Hampton favorite. If you love audience participation, you’ll love their interactive drag variety show. The Grey Goose is also home to a delicious menu – including luscious biscuits and gravy, wild boar andouille, and fried chicken benedict you won’t want to miss! Check the schedule for details, as new shows are always being added.

    Circus of Sistahs

    Various Locations

Whether you’re into brunch, bingo, or trivia nights, the Circus of Sistahs will definitely delight. They host a series of drag events throughout the Peninsula. The ladies have even been known to offer salsa dancing lessons on occasion! Event locations vary, so be sure to follow the Circus of Sistahs on social media to keep up with the latest happenings.
